CAPRISA 004 Ground breaking Implications for Women in the Fight Against HIV PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 21 July 2010

If you have not seen or heard news from the International AIDS conference today a recent South African Study – titled CAPRISA 004 STUDY – has provided ground breaking evidence that the use of an antiretroviral drug (tenofovir) in the form of a vaginal gel can prevent HIV infections in women. As the researchers have stressed this is only initial evidence, and much further research is needed, but after one year of use, women who used tenofovir gel had 50% fewer HIV infections compared to women who used the placebo gel during sex acts.

As you know women need a tool that is discrete, affordable, and accessible. If the protective effect shown in CAPRISA 004 is confirmed by another study, the broader use of tenofovir gel could benefit millions of Women especially those in situations of violence.

Our Policy & Advocacy team and PLUS (Positive Leaders Uplifting Sisters) Network are working to ensure women have safe and viable tools to protect themselves. Contact Abby if you are interseted in learning more about PLUS and our work.
